CDS Appoints Founder to Board of Directors in Celebration of their 20^th Anniversary

Greenville, S.C.  (January 21, 2020):  The Center for Developmental Services (CDS) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Bill Schmidt to its Board of Directors in celebration of their 20^th anniversary.

 Dr. Schmidt, a newly retired pediatric oncologist from the Prisma Health System Children’s Hospital, has been a champion for children throughout his 30-year career. He led numerous community efforts in his roles at Prisma Health as Chair of Pediatrics, Founding Medical Director of the Children’s Hospital, President of the University Medical Group, Administrator of the Children’s Hospital, and most recently as Vice President of Development. In 2018, Dr. Schmidt received the prestigious Order of the Palmetto, our state’s highest civilian honor awarded to citizens of South Carolina for extraordinary lifetime service and achievements.

Dr. Schmidt was the visionary behind CDS and was instrumental in aligning a community effort to open the organization’s doors. In honor of being CDS’ founder, and to acknowledge his advocacy for children, Dr. Schmidt has been given special Emeritus status on the CDS board. Dr. Schmidt comments, “I look at my role in the creation of CDS as one of my greatest professional accomplishments. It’s a perfect example of how a community can join together to address complex children’s needs.”

CDS Executive Director Dana McConnell said “Dr. Schmidt’s strategic vision is highly respected throughout our organization. We are excited he will now be part of our leadership that enables CDS to serve more children with developmental needs and disabilities.”

A special community open house will be held in April to commemorate CDS’ 20^th anniversary.

CDS is the largest multi-disciplinary treatment facility in the Upstate for children with disabilities and developmental delays. In one location, children receive services in therapy, diagnosis, legal help, day care needs for the medically fragile, and a family support network. The partnership is comprised of Clarity; Family Connection of SC; Medical-Legal Partnership; KidVentures of Thrive Upstate; and four programs of Prisma Health – Upstate: Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Kidnetics, The Wonder Center, and Prosthetics and Orthotics.
